Over the years, National Geographic Expeditions has covered a wide range of environmental and social issues. These stories and experiences have left a lasting impact on their own commitment to sustainability and responsible business practices.
National Geographic Expeditions’s ultimate sustainability goal is achieving carbon neutrality. In partnership with NativeEnergy, they are using carbon offsets to make that goal a reality.
National Geographic Corporate Sustainability Policy
Environmental impacts
All National Geographic Expeditions’ business processes are designed in a way that minimizes negative environmental impacts.
National Geographic Expeditions’ primary focus is reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to combat global climate change.
Many reductions are achieved by taking a mindful, deliberate approach to the everyday business practices, such as shutting off boilers during off hours and getting office supplies delivered only once per week.
In areas where emissions cannot be reduced, National Geographic Expeditions seeks out certified, audited carbon offset projects.
Social impacts
Deliberate consideration of the social impacts of their activities is an important part of National Geographic Expeditions’s sustainability policy.
National Geographic Expeditions pays particular attention to product and employee safety and is fully committed to supporting international human rights and ethics.
They also encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally-friendly technologies, such as water filters, to communities across the world.
How NativeEnergy Helps
The partnership with NativeEnergy has helped National Geographic Expeditions create long-lasting environmental and social impacts, as well as strengthen their image as a socially responsible, conscious publication.
Their investment has been essential for launching two of NativeEnergy’s projects: the Kenya Clean Water Project and the Ghana Clean Water Project.
Environmental projects that save lives
In rural Kenya, waterborne illness is the leading cause of death for young children.
The Greater Accra Region of Ghana has not fared much better: more than 50% of its 2.1 million residents lack access to clean water.
The wood they use to boil water for purification purposes not harvested sustainably, and burning it contributes to climate change by unlocking the carbon molecules stored inside.
Boiling the water also increases indoor air pollution, creating more health problems than it solves.
NativeEnergy’s Hydraid® BioSand water filter is a practical alternative that reduces greenhouse gas pollution and brings clean air and water to families no matter where they live.
National Geographic Expeditions’s investment was essential for providing 2,000 of these water filters to households in the Kenyan villages of Siaya and Bondo, and 1,700 of them to schools and families in the Greater Accra Region in Ghana.
Long-lasting social impacts
National Geographic Expeditions’s investment in both projects has created long-lasting social impacts by increasing the economic activity in the area.
During both projects, National Geographic Expeditions and NativeEnergywe were able to increase local economic activity by hiring on-the-ground staff to administer program operations and water quality.
The installation of water filters is not a short-term solution: both projects are going to have a long-lasting impact on their respective communities.
The oversight and tracking system will ensure proper installation and use of the water filters for at least the next 10 years.
The newly established knowledge base will take care of the rest, propelling both regions towards economic growth and sustainability.
